After experiencing development challenges, Labl.it approached us for a full rebuild of their commercial kitchen labelling solution.

Labl.it is one of the South Coast’s fastest growing tech startups, providing commercial kitchen automation to hundreds of establishments nationwide. Since their launch, their SaaS product has been very popular with kitchen staff and restaurant managers, growing their user base to over 1000 establishments.
With several major prospective customers asking for more complex functionality, Labl.it needed to upgrade and scale their existing platform to meet demand.
Dealing with delays
Before engaging with Novatura, Labl.it had invested a significant amount of time and energy into developing their new platform. Despite 9 months of development, the system was still not ready for launch.
With only 5 weeks left to onboard their new clients, Labl.it needed a quick and hassle-free solution.
A fresh menu: the API rebuild
Novatura was approached to take over the project and deliver a fully functional system in that short timeframe. After auditing the existing codebases, we decided to start the cloud backend from scratch, using Laravel to develop a robust and scalable API. This allowed us to integrate with the existing React frontends, saving us a huge amount of time. The goals of the rebuild were:
- Clone all the existing functionality
- Improve performance and scalability
- Add support for multi-site management
Collaborating closely with the Labl.it team, we delivered a functional system right on time, with a few weeks of troubleshooting and support to follow.
With the urgent deadline met, the pressure on Labl.it was slightly reduced. However, the work was far from over, as we needed to move existing users onto the new platform.
Spicing things up: the app rebuild
The next step was to rebuild the app frontend, integrate it with the new backend, add new features, and improve the customer experience. Utilising React Native and Expo, we developed a new app that was faster and more reliable than the previous version.
To coordinate the release, we collaborated with Labl.it and Blue Frontier who provided support. In the end we were able to deploy the new app and migrate the whole user base with minimal disruption.
Serving up success
The new system is now live and used by all of Labl.it’s customers. Now able to handle the increased demand, the system can onboard larger clients, allowing them to get the most out of it. With restored control of their own platform, Labl.it have been able to lay the groundwork for future growth and development.
At the time of writing, the system is being used at over 1000 establishments, with over 400,000 labels being printed weekly. Kudos to the team at Blue Frontier for their support throughout the project!
